Platform height versus working height
The platform height is the height of the work platform itself, measured from the ground. The working height is the platform height plus approximately 2 metres reach height of an average adult standing on the platform. A working height of 9 metres therefore corresponds to a platform height of approximately 7 metres.

Gable tops, end walls and high gutters
At 7 metres platform height you come out above the second floor. The gutter of a tall terraced house, the brickwork at the top of a gable, the joint where an end wall meets the roof edge and the upper rows of tiles are all within reach. Common jobs are repointing high up the wall, checking lead flashing, painting bargeboards and fascias, and finishing off the top of a dormer. These are jobs where you want to stand exactly right, not roughly right.
On a gable the wall narrows as it rises. Set the tower so the platform is at the right height for the wide part of the wall, and move it to reach the point rather than stretching for it. Look at what is below as well: an extension, a conservatory or a sloping bank means the tower cannot stand equally close to the wall everywhere. Work that out before the parts are delivered, not while you are holding a frame.
Getting material up without a struggle
At this height you no longer just carry something up. Mortar, cartridges of sealant, a tile or a length of fascia have to go up while you want both hands on the tower. So work with two people: one stays below and passes up, one takes delivery on the platform. Do it in small loads. Load class 3 allows 200 kilos per square metre, but the practical limit is whatever you can take hold of without losing your balance.
Think about the way back down too. Stripped material, old tiles and waste have to come down again, and that is the moment people start rushing. Put a container ready at the bottom and let nothing lie loose on the platform, because a tool falling 7 metres lands hard. The platform length of 245 centimetres gives you room to keep material and yourself apart, as long as you actually keep that room free.
Wind, building in lifts and the time it takes
From this height wind is no longer a detail. A gust you barely notice at ground level pushes noticeably against you and against any board or sheet you take up with you. Do not handle large flat pieces of material on a windy day, and postpone the job rather than pushing through it. Before you go up, check that all guard rails and toe boards are where they belong and that the wheel brakes are locked.
Allow more build time than for a low set up. You build in several lifts, fit the guard rails on each lift before you go higher, and work from the platform itself. Two people manage this comfortably, on your own it becomes slow and awkward. Never move the tower with anyone or anything on it: everything off, stabilisers released, roll it, level it again and only then go back up.
Safety at 9 metres
Our mobile scaffolds meet the European standard EN 1004. Always lock the castors as soon as you stand on the platform, use the guardrails, and never move the scaffold while someone is on it. Do not work in wind force 6 or higher, certainly not at greater working heights such as 9 metres.

When should I stop because of wind?
When you notice yourself bracing, or when boards, sheeting and empty buckets start moving, it is too strong. At 7 metres platform height the tower catches far more wind than you feel at ground level. Do not take large flat items up in gusty weather, and clear loose objects off the platform when you finish for the day.
