A narrow strip between the dunes and the IJsselmeer

Noord-Holland is a long, narrow province with the North Sea along one flank and the IJsselmeer along the other. Between those two edges lie drained polders, older peat meadow and, further north, the sea clay of West-Friesland. For anyone working at height the practical upshot is variety: within a single province you can step off a beach ridge of firm sand straight into a polder where the ground gives way the moment you put weight on it.

The buildings follow the same pattern. Along the coast and in the villages near the IJsselmeer you find compact old centres with narrow houses and low gutters. In the reclaimed land and the post-war estates beyond them everything is laid out more generously, with room to spare beside the facade. That difference in standing room decides which model suits a job far more often than the height of the work itself.

Peat under the paving, and what it does to the adjustable feet

Large parts of this province sit on peat and soft clay. Garden paths, driveways and old brick paving settle unevenly over the years, something you only really notice when you try to get a tower level. The adjustable feet then end up at very different heights, and on soft ground they belong on base plates that spread the weight rather than press it into a single spot.

What people underestimate is how much weight eventually rests on those four points: the frame, the platform sections, the person standing on them and every bit of material carried up. On peat, in a garden that has recently been filled in or on a terrace laid last season, a solid plate under each foot is not an excessive precaution. In this part of the country it is simply the normal way of working.

The coastal belt: wind, salt and constant facade work

From the dune edge through the IJmond and on to the north, buildings take an unbroken diet of sea wind and salt air. Paint lifts sooner on the western and south-western elevations, ironmongery seizes faster, and any part of a facade that never dries out grows a green film. Painting and facade cleaning here are a recurring cycle rather than a one-off job.

Near the coast the wind matters during the work as well. A tower standing in the open, with no neighbouring building to give it shelter, calls for extra attention to the stabilisers and an honest decision about whether the top platform height is sensible on a blustery day. Planning the job for a calm morning does more good in practice than any accessory you could add to it.

West-Friesland and the Kop: open plots, detached houses

Further north the picture changes. Villages sit further apart, there are more detached houses and farms with a yard of their own, and there is nearly always room to set a tower out fully on all four sides. That is why the choice here falls more often on the RS52 with its platform width of 135 centimetres, since the extra working room is welcome along gutters and fascia boards that run the full width of a building.

Het Gooi and the sandy ground in the east

On the eastern side of the province lies a wooded sand ridge, and on it sprawling villa districts with heavy roofs, bay windows and dormers. The ground underfoot is markedly firmer than in the polders, but the roofs are taller and far more complicated in shape. Working height is platform height plus two metres, and with this kind of house that sum is often underestimated, because the ridge sits much further up than the gutter suggests.

Trees are the second thing to reckon with. Houses standing among pines and oaks have gutters that fill every autumn and shaded elevations that turn green. For that sort of repeat work on one side of a house a low set-up is usually enough, while a full repaint all the way round goes noticeably quicker with a tower you can roll along instead of taking apart and rebuilding.

Building in the polders and the post-war centres

The polder villages and the estates from the sixties and seventies have a recognisable profile: terraces of family houses with matching gutter heights, generous rear paths and gardens you can walk round from the street. For most of that work, from window frames to fascias and dormers, the platform height needed stays modest and a low build is more than enough. The range starts at 4.2 metres working height, which covers the majority of jobs on this type of house.

What does count here is getting through. Rear paths and gates are often exactly wide enough to stop a broad tower while letting a narrow one pass. The RS51 is 75 centimetres wide and fits where the RS52 gets stuck. Measuring the tightest opening beforehand keeps the equipment from ending up on the wrong side of the house.

Close to the warehouse, and what that is worth

Our warehouse is at Zeeburgerpad 89 in Amsterdam, right in the middle of this province. Noord-Holland is therefore the area with the shortest run, and you notice it most in how much slack there is in the planning. Order before three in the afternoon on a working day and the tower is ready on site the next working day, and an address at the very top of the province fits comfortably inside that.

The short distance also makes collecting the equipment yourself a realistic option here. That is free of charge by appointment, and it saves the delivery run, although the deposit is higher when you collect than when we deliver, since the equipment then travels out of our sight. Whichever route you choose, the deposit goes back within one working day of the tower being returned.

Maintenance that keeps returning in this province

Three jobs come up more than average in Noord-Holland: painting timber frames that have taken a beating from the sea wind, cleaning and repairing gutters, and dealing with green growth on north and west facing walls. None of them demands spectacular height, but all of them need a stable place to stand for hours at a stretch without constant repositioning. That is why so many people here put the ladder away as soon as a job runs past a single afternoon.

Work on flat roofs is increasing too, from roof covering to adding equipment up there. Getting on and off safely is far more comfortable from a tower than from a ladder, certainly with tools in your hands. The equipment always arrives in separate parts; putting it up and taking it down again is the user's job, using the written instructions and the video that come with it.
