The province of Groningen consists of the compact student city of Groningen and a vast, sparsely populated Ommeland.

Both in the city of Groningen and in the villages of the Ommeland, we deliver for one fixed price.

A compact city and a wide-open Ommeland

This province splits sharply in two. In the middle sits a densely built city with a great deal of stacked housing, old centre properties and a large stock of subdivided homes. Around it stretches a thinly populated area with villages set far apart, big farmsteads and a lot of detached building. What working at height demands differs fundamentally between those two worlds, even though only a short drive separates them.

In the city, room to set up is the scarce commodity, and what counts most is whether the equipment will pass through a gateway, an alley or a rear access. In the Ommeland space is in plentiful supply and the question is instead the length of the facade and the number of metres you have to cover in a day. Choosing the right model here starts with where the address actually is.

Wierde villages on the northern clay

In the north of the province, villages sit on artificial mounds raised long before there were any dykes. The building falls away from a church at the highest point towards the edges, which means the streets and yards there all slope to some degree. A scaffold set up in a village core of that kind is almost never standing on level ground, however level it may look to the eye.

The subsoil is heavy marine clay. It carries a load excellently in dry spells, but after a wet week it turns soft and slippery, especially on a verge or a semi-paved entrance. That makes spreading the load with plates under the levelling feet a standard step here rather than an exception. On a small dyke or a driveway that feels spongy after rain, it is the difference between standing firm and gradually settling out of true.

The large farmhouses of the east

The arable east of this province is known for its strikingly large farmsteads: stately front houses with a substantial working section behind, built in an era when grain growing here paid handsomely. The front houses have tall windows, a considerable gutter height and a lot of painted timber in frames, shutters and roof edges, while the barn behind carries an enormous roof plane with long gutters. Shutters are often painted in contrasting colours.

For maintenance on buildings of this sort the wide model is generally the most practical. The broader platform leaves room to keep paint, tools and a bucket up top with you, and on a paved yard you can reposition without dismantling first. The extra standing area repays itself on an elevation that runs to tens of metres. One set-up position therefore covers a wider stretch of wall.

The peat colonies: long ribbons along the water

In the southeast of the province lies a district that owes its shape to peat digging centuries ago. The building follows the canals and side channels in long straight ribbons, with modest houses standing close to the road and deep, narrow plots behind them. The houses themselves are mostly low: two storeys or fewer, under a simple roof. That roof usually runs straight through, without a dormer to interrupt it.

The ground beneath those ribbons is a mixture of residual peat and sand, which means the bearing capacity can differ from one plot to the next. At one address the scaffold stands solid straight away; at the next a foot visibly sinks the moment somebody steps onto the platform. Establishing by trial how the ground reacts before you go up is sensible work here.

Wind off the Wadden and the open land

The northern coast of this province borders the Wadden area, and behind it lies wide open arable land with no shelter worth the name. Wind arrives on the facade you are working on entirely unbroken. For a free-standing scaffold that means the forecast is every bit as decisive for the planning as the availability of equipment or the size of the job itself. Shelter from surrounding buildings falls away completely here.

The practical approach is to start on the lee side of the building and save the windward side for a calm morning. On a farmyard a barn often makes an excellent windbreak, and it pays to adjust the order of the work accordingly. In persistently strong wind, postponing work on the highest platform positions is not excessive caution but simply the normal way of going about it.

Buildings that need extra attention

Part of this province has had to deal with damage to buildings in recent years, so there is more work than average on brickwork, pointing, chimneys and facade junctions. That is work spread across an elevation, where you often need to be able to stand at several heights without rebuilding each time. Moving a ladder after every single operation makes jobs like these needlessly long.

On work of that kind a scaffold with a longer platform has the advantage over a ladder: you reach a wider stretch of wall from one position and you can put tools down beside you. To reach a chimney on a two-storey house, the rule of thumb of platform height plus two metres usually lands you on a set-up somewhere in the middle of the available range.

Far from the warehouse: planning and hire days

This province sits in the northern corner of the country, so the run from our warehouse in Amsterdam is one of the longest we drive. That distance has no bearing on the delivery date. Bookings that come in before three in the afternoon on a working day are delivered the next working day, including to a village deep in the Ommeland. The journey is simply taken into the day planning like any other.

It is wise, though, to take the hire period generously. Because the first day counts in full and every following day carries a 95 percent discount, continuous hire is almost always better value than having the equipment collected partway and brought out again later. Fetching equipment yourself over a distance like this is hardly worth anyone's while, so nearly everything here goes out by delivery.

What comes back most often here

Three kinds of work stand out. First, pointing and brickwork on older buildings, which needs attention sooner here through the combined effect of damp, wind and settlement. Second, painting the many timber components of farmhouse front elevations and village houses, where the sea wind wears the paint on the west side harder than elsewhere on the same building. On the sheltered side the paint lasts years longer.

Third, maintenance of chimneys and roof edges, which the weather always reaches first. On this work you are often at the same building for days on end, and then it counts that the set-up stays stable and that shifting to the next elevation takes little effort. Assembly and dismantling are for the user; we bring the parts out and fetch them back.
