Three landscapes inside one provincial border
Gelderland is the largest province in the country and consists in practice of three different regions. A broad wooded sand ridge sits in the middle, an agricultural district of villages, field complexes and hedgerows lies to the east, and the south is river country with dykes, floodplains and orchards. Each of the three brings its own building style, its own subsoil and its own kind of maintenance work.
For working at height that matters more than it sounds. A detached house in the woods with a steep roof asks for something quite different from a dyke house whose front and back start at different levels. Choosing equipment in this province works better if you look at the region rather than only at the number of storeys, and the choice between a narrow and a wide set-up genuinely differs from one district to the next.
Living among the woods on the sandy ground
On the high sandy ground stand many detached houses on generous plots, with heavy roofs, overhanging eaves and mature trees all around. The soil is firm and free draining, so the adjustable feet stand steady as soon as they find a level patch. Loose forest litter and soft humus do call for base plates, because that top layer carries far less than it appears to.
The maintenance that goes with these houses is recognisable. Gutters fill with leaves and needles every autumn, north facing walls go green in the shade of the trees, and timber on eaves and boarding needs a disciplined painting cycle. Most of that work sits higher than on a terraced house, because the ridge of this type of building rises a long way above the gutter.
Farmsteads and yards in the east
In the eastern part of the province the buildings are scattered across yards and strung along village ribbons. The farms there have a living section with a relatively low gutter and an attached or separate working section with a large roof plane. For a repaint or a gutter replacement the challenge is not the height but the length: you cover dozens of metres of facade in a single job.
On such yards there is nearly always room to set out generously and to keep the tower rolling. The wide version has the advantage there: a platform of 135 centimetres keeps material within reach up top, so you climb down less often. On a gravel path or a semi-paved drive a plate under every foot is the standard approach.
River country: dykes, clay and fruit
South of the province the big rivers set the scene. Villages sit on and along the dykes, with houses that begin a full storey lower on the inner side than on the outer. Ground level jumps around such buildings, and that is precisely the scenario in which the adjustable feet need their full range to bring a platform level.
The subsoil is river clay: firm enough while it is dry, but soft and slippery after a wet spell. At fruit growing businesses, with their barns and sheds, the ground is often only semi-paved as well. There too, spreading the point load with plates is the difference between a set-up that stays where you put it and one that sinks through the course of the day.
Cities on the edge of the ice-pushed ridge
The larger cities of the province lie along the southern edge of the sand ridge and are partly built on a slope. Streets noticeably rise and fall, which is a rarity elsewhere in the Netherlands. A tower on a sloping street needs not only extended feet but a deliberate decision about exactly where it is going to stand.
These cities also hold a lot of pre-war and post-war housing packed closely together, with narrow rear paths and gateways. At 75 centimetres wide the RS51 gets past where broader set-ups jam. If the job is indoors, in a tall stairwell for instance, the room scaffold is the model built for it and the one you carry from room to room. In older upstairs flats in these cities that is a common situation.
Sloping ground and working level
The differences in level in this province, on the dykes as well as on the ridge, turn levelling into a skill of its own. The rule is simple: the platform has to be horizontal regardless of what the ground beneath it is doing. That means the four adjustable feet end up at very different settings and that you check again after every move instead of assuming it is still right.
On a slope a tower does not move safely as a matter of course. It is wiser to take it back down to a low stage, move it, and then build up again, rather than crossing sloping ground at full height. That costs an extra quarter of an hour per move, but it is how this kind of terrain should be handled. On a dyke embankment it is anything but excessive caution.
A large province at a distance from the warehouse
Gelderland lies outside the Randstad and the run from Amsterdam is considerably longer than to the provinces around us. That changes nothing about the delivery term: an order placed before three in the afternoon on a working day is delivered the next working day. Delivery is a planned run, though, so it helps if the address is accessible and somebody is there on the agreed day.

What comes back structurally here is timber in a wooded setting: frames, boarding, fascias and dormers that need attention sooner because of damp and shade than they would on an open, sunny plot. Keeping gutters clear is an annual job rather than an occasional one, simply because so much leaf hangs over the roofs. Skip a year and the first heavy shower shows you, in the form of a gutter running over.
In the river country the emphasis shifts to brickwork and pointing, where settlement of the clay encourages cracking. And on the farm buildings and sheds throughout the countryside there is continuous work on roof edges and on everything mounted on a large roof plane.
