Mobile scaffold for the ground floor

On the ground floor you usually work up to around 4 metres of working height: enough for window frames, the front door, the skirting and the lowest band of brickwork, and for indoor jobs in a living room with a high ceiling. The tower then often stands on a driveway, in the front garden or indoors on the floor. That calls for level ground and enough room for the base.

Which working height do you need?

For most jobs at ground level, such as painting window frames, a skirting or a low facade edge, a working height of around 4 metres is enough. That corresponds to a platform height of about 2 metres, enough to comfortably reach the top of most window frames and doors on the ground floor.

Working height is not the same as platform height: the working height is the platform height plus approximately 2 metres reach height of an average adult. If you are between two heights, most customers prefer the taller one, so that you do not have to stretch or stand on your toes while working.

Jobs that fall at ground floor level

Around four metres of working height covers everything below the first floor ceiling. Think of sanding and painting the window frames downstairs, varnishing the front door, touching up the skirting and the lowest course of brickwork, or replacing a broken pane. A low string course, the band above the garage door and the cable of an outside light usually sit within this reach as well.

Indoors the same height matters in a living room with a high ceiling, on a landing or above a stairwell. Repairing plaster, painting a ceiling, touching up cornices or fitting a light goes far more calmly on a tower than on a ladder, because you can put your tools down beside you and work with both hands. A set up above a staircase stays awkward; check carefully that the base stands level and fully supported everywhere.

Setting up on a driveway, in the front garden or inside

A driveway of block paving or slabs is usually a fine surface, as long as you watch the fall towards the street and any loose or sunken stones. Level the base with the adjustable legs and check that all four wheels or feet actually carry load. In a front garden with grass, gravel or soil, lay firm boards under the feet first, so the tower cannot sink the moment you climb on with material.

Inside the house the width of the doorway matters more than the height. The RS44 room scaffold fits through an internal door from about 70 cm, so you can move it from room to room without stripping everything down. Cover the floor before you start, allow for thresholds and for a hallway that is narrower than the door itself, and only move the tower when it is empty. Outside the same rule applies: move first, then lift the material back up.

Which tower suits this height

Working height is the platform height plus roughly 2 metres of reach. For around 4 metres of working height you therefore stand at about 2 metres of platform height, which means a low build with only a few lifts. The RS51 is 75 cm wide and slides easily past a car or along a narrow garden path; the RS52 is 135 cm wide and gives more room to work on the platform. Both have a platform length of 245 cm.

If you work alone, the MiTower is a one person tower up to 6 metres of working height, so more than enough for the ground floor. All mobile towers meet EN 1004 and are built to load class 3, which is 200 kg per m2, so paint, buckets or a toolbox can stand beside you. The tower arrives as a complete set of parts; you build it yourself with the manual and the video, and everything is collected again afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

How much working height do I need for the ground floor?

For most window frames, doors and low string courses on the ground floor, around 4 metres of working height is enough. Storey heights do vary from house to house: a nineteen thirties home often has higher ceilings than a post war terrace or a new build. Measure from the ground to the highest point you need to reach and subtract roughly 2 metres of reach.

Can the tower stand on a driveway or in the front garden?

Yes, provided the surface is level and able to carry the load. On paving or slabs, level the base with the adjustable legs; on grass, gravel or soil, lay firm boards under the feet first. Watch the fall towards the street, along with manhole covers and loose slabs, and keep enough clear space all around the base.

Will a tower fit through my doors for indoor work?

The RS44 room scaffold is made for exactly that and fits through an internal door from about 70 cm. Measure the narrowest passage in advance, so the hallway, the foot of the stairs and any thresholds as well. Always move the tower empty, with no tools on the platform, and cover the floor so wheels and feet leave no marks.

How quickly can I get a tower for a one day job?

Order before 15:00 and delivery on the next working day is possible. If you would rather not wait for delivery, you can collect free of charge by appointment at Zeeburgerpad 89, 1019 AD Amsterdam. The first 24 hours are charged at the full rate, and every day after that comes with 95% off, so running a day over hardly matters.

Do you assemble the scaffold, or do I do that myself?

Our scaffolds are designed to be assembled quickly and safely by yourself, without special tools. Follow the manual and video supplied. If you get stuck, we will help you straight away via WhatsApp or by phone.

Can I choose a lower working height for the ground floor to save money?

You can, but we advise against cutting it too fine: too little working height means you still have to stretch or stand on your toes, which is less safe. Choose a slightly taller working height rather than one right on the limit.
