A province of low building
Drenthe stands apart from almost every other province in how little tall building it has. Outside the two larger towns the housing stock consists mainly of detached and semi-detached houses of one or two storeys, under simple roofs and with generous gardens around them. That makes working at height here lower on average, and more spacious in its layout, than in the west of the country.
The consequence is that the working height needed is rarely the sticking point. Add two metres to the platform height and you have the working height; for a gutter on the first or second storey that means a build of modest proportions. What does count is the perimeter of the building: you work right round a whole house more often than on a single elevation, and that means repositioning.
Es villages and their village greens
The old villages in this province grew up around a communal open space planted with trees, with the farmsteads set loosely in a ring around it. There is no strict building line and hardly a straight street to be found; the buildings sit at angles to one another and the yards run into each other without any clear boundary. For putting up a scaffold, that mainly means space to work with.
What makes it less straightforward is the ground under those old greens. Often it is grass, or a semi-paved layer with sand beneath it, with the roots of mature trees running through the lot. A spot that looks level can still settle unevenly under load, and plates under the four levelling feet stop you having to readjust halfway through the day.
Farmhouses with a low gutter and a big roof
The traditional farmhouse type on the Drenthe sandy soils has a broad, low-sweeping roof plane where the gutter along the long sides comes strikingly close to the ground. At the gable end, by contrast, the wall continues up into the roof and the highest point sits considerably higher. That difference within one building determines how you divide up a maintenance job on such a property.
In practice it means a low set-up will do along the long side while the gable end demands a good deal more height. Because there is ample room on yards like these, the choice usually falls on the wide model: more standing area, space for materials, and the option of rolling along a long gutter without dismantling each time.
The peat colonies in the east
The east of the province holds a district that owes its straight canals and long building ribbons to the large-scale digging of raised bog. The houses there are modest in size, stand close to the road and sit on narrow plots. The picture is completely different from that of the es villages a little further on, even though they lie in the same province. A ribbon like that sometimes runs on and on without any real village core.
The subsoil is residual peat mixed with sand, which makes the bearing capacity unpredictable. On one plot a scaffold stands stable immediately, on the next the ground clearly gives. Checking how a foot responds under load before you build any higher is the most practical precaution there is here. A board under the foot will do, provided it genuinely spreads the weight.
Living among the trees
This province is rich in woodland, and a large share of its houses stand at or inside a wood edge. It is pleasant living, but it calls for particular maintenance. Gutters fill with needles and leaves every autumn, moss takes hold on roof tiles on the shaded side, and walls that catch little sun or wind turn green a fair way above ground level.
The work that goes with it is modest in height but extensive in scope. You cover the entire perimeter of the house and you often need both hands, which makes a ladder an awkward tool for the job. A scaffold you can stand on with your tools and a bucket beside you is, on this kind of work, the difference between half a day and a whole one.
The larger towns and their post-war districts
Around the two biggest places in the province lie districts built quickly after the war, with terraced houses, walk-up flats and later roomier family housing. The pattern there is one that is recognisable in many Dutch towns: identical gutter heights along entire streets, and rear paths narrow enough to decide what will fit through. There is also more stacked housing than the general image of this province would suggest.
For a rear access or a gateway you need the narrow RS51, which at 75 centimetres is just narrow enough. For interior work, on a high ceiling or a stairwell for instance, the room scaffold is the right model: it can be brought inside through a doorway from around 70 centimetres upwards and moves easily from room to room. That spares the floor from having loose parts dragged across it.
At a distance from the Randstad

Most of the work in this province comes down to the consequences of a green, damp setting: clearing and repairing gutters, removing moss and growth from walls and roof planes, and protecting timber that dries slowly in the shade. It is predictable, recurring maintenance that almost always extends around the full perimeter of a house. Leave it for a season and the growth spreads quickly across more of the wall.
On top of that there is continuous work on the yards and outbuildings, on large roof planes and long gutters.
