From textile towns to water country
Overijssel breaks down into clearly distinct parts. The former textile towns lie in the east with their workers' districts, the middle holds farming country around the IJssel with old trading towns on the river, and the north west is a watery peat landscape full of canals and lakes. For building maintenance that means three very different tasks inside one provincial border, and the approach varies sharply over quite short distances.
The age of the buildings varies just as much. On the river stand houses going back centuries, in the eastern towns the stock runs from around the turn of the last century through to post-war reconstruction, and on the edge of virtually every settlement lie estates from the seventies and later. That spread makes the working height needed differ from one address to the next.
Workers' housing in the eastern towns
Industrial growth in the east produced whole districts of small terraced workers' houses: two storeys, a simple roof, short frontages and narrow rear paths. These are buildings where the gutter is low and the job rarely reaches beyond a modest platform height, but where access to the back is almost always the sticking point. A gateway under a metre wide is entirely normal in these streets.
The narrow version is meant for exactly this. At 75 centimetres wide it passes through gates and between fences where broader set-ups cannot follow. Working at the front usually gives more room, but there the pavement runs straight into the carriageway, which calls for a well chosen spot and a quiet moment in the day.
Yards and field complexes in the farming country
Outside the settlements the buildings are spread over yards, often a house with one or more barns and an open fronted shed along a shared drive. The traditional farm form in this region has one large continuous roof plane that comes down a long way at the rear, so the gutter there is within reach while at the front it sits considerably higher. The ridge runs the full depth of the building.
That asymmetric profile means one building often needs two different set-ups over the course of a job. On a roomy yard that is no obstacle: there is space enough to stand the wide version and roll it along with the work as it progresses. On an unpaved yard, though, plates under the feet belong with it, because the top layer visibly gives way after a spell of rain.
The IJssel and the old trading towns
Along the river lie towns that owed their wealth to trade and still show it in their buildings: narrow, deep houses with tall decorated facades standing square on the street. The facade height is surprising in relation to the width, so facade maintenance takes you higher than the streetscape suggests. A stepped or neck gable adds several more metres on top of that.
At the same time the room to stand is minimal. A narrow set-up is then almost always the only possibility, and at some addresses even that will not fit and the work has to move inside. The room scaffold goes through a doorway from roughly 70 centimetres, which makes it the answer for tall halls, stairwells and ceilings in this type of building. The job then stays indoors without the street being involved at all.
Peat and water in the north west
The north western corner of the province is a cut-over peat landscape of canals, reed beds and lakes, with houses that are sometimes reachable only along a narrow path or from the water. The ground is peat: soft, springy and in places barely able to take a point load without something sinking into it. A solid plate under each foot makes an immediate, noticeable difference there.
Preparation matters more here than the choice of equipment. Pick a spot on paving that genuinely carries the load, spread the weight across plates, and bear in mind that the route in can be narrower than the standing place itself. If an address is awkward to reach, it is worth telling us beforehand so the delivery can be arranged around it.
Extension estates around the larger settlements
Around virtually every town and larger village in this province lie estates ranging from the seventies to recent new build. Terraced houses with a shed, a rear path and a uniform gutter height dominate the picture. The maintenance is predictable and the height needed is modest, so a low build is nearly always sufficient. The dormer is usually the highest point anyone has to reach.

In the eastern town districts the work is often brickwork and pointing on stock around a century old, plus the painting of the timber elements that go with it. In the countryside it shifts to large surfaces: facade cladding, fascias and gutters on barns, and everything maintained or added on a substantial roof plane. On surfaces like that a repaint quickly runs across several working days.
In the watery north west the effect of a permanently damp environment comes on top of that, with green growth on facades and bank revetments asking for attention.
