At four metres of platform height your hips sit roughly level with the head of a first floor door. Add the two metres of reach and your hands land on the sills, the frames and the brickwork just above them. On most terraced houses that is exactly the band of paintwork that becomes unworkable from a ladder. You stand level, you keep both hands free, and your paint sits beside you instead of hanging off a rung.

Knowing where six metres stops matters just as much. The underside of a dormer, the fascia board of an average terraced house or the gutter of a home with tall storeys often sits just out of range. Measure from the spot where the tower will actually stand, so from the paving or the grass, not from a raised terrace. If you end up above six metres, take the next size up rather than reaching from the top deck.

The RS51 is 75 centimetres wide and therefore fits through a narrow gate or side passage, while the RS52 is 135 centimetres wide and leaves space for a paint tin, a sealant gun and a sander beside you. Both have a platform length of 245 centimetres, meet EN 1004 and carry 200 kilos per square metre in load class 3. For indoor work the RS44 room tower fits through an internal door from about 70 centimetres.

The tower arrives as a complete set of parts and is collected again once you are finished. You build it yourself with the manual and the instruction video at hand, because Steigertaxi does not come and assemble it and never delivers it ready built. At six metres that stays manageable: you need a limited number of levels and the heavier parts never travel far upwards. Lay every component out on the ground in order first, so you are not hunting for a missing brace halfway up.

The mistakes at this height are almost always the same. People set the tower on loose paving or a sloping path, leave the stabilisers pushed in because a bike rack happens to be in the way, or forget to lock the castors. Place the tower close enough to the wall that you never have to lean out to reach the top of a frame. Walk around the base once more before you climb up with a full tin of paint.
