Sandy ground, with a clay fringe in the west
Most of Noord-Brabant sits on cover sand, and for anyone working at height that is a comfortable starting point. Sand carries a load well, it drains quickly and it does not settle unevenly the way peat does. Only in the west, where the landscape slides towards the marine clay of the delta region, does that change: the subsoil becomes heavier and, after a wet spell, far less predictable.
Firm ground is still no licence to work without base plates. A garden that has just been laid out, a driveway of loose gravel or the verge beside a paved entrance will all give way under point loading, sand or no sand. The full weight of frame, platform, user and materials arrives on four feet and a very small footprint, so spreading that load remains part of setting up.
Long-facade farmhouses and village ribbons
The countryside here holds a large number of long-facade farmhouses, buildings where the living quarters and the working quarters sit one behind the other under a single unbroken ridge. The gutter is relatively low, but the facade runs on and on, so a job on such a building is more a matter of covering metres than of reaching height. One set-up position covers only a modest slice of the whole elevation.
For work of that shape the RS52 is the sensible choice, with a platform measuring 135 by 245 centimetres. There is room on it for materials, you climb down less often, and on a paved yard you can roll on to the next stretch of wall without dismantling first. Where the yard is unpaved it is better to pick one level patch and work outwards from there.
Post-war growth and the districts it left behind
The strong industrial development in the south of the province during the last century came with housebuilding on a large scale. Whole districts of family homes, walk-up flats and, later, roomier terraces went up in a short space of time. Those houses have now reached the point where window frames, fascia boards and roof coverings are due for replacement, and that work tends to happen street by street in much the same sequence.
The working height involved is middling. On two storeys with a pitched roof, platform height plus two metres puts you comfortably above the gutter. Stacked housing sits higher, but even then you stay well inside the 14.2 metres of working height that is the maximum available. The limiting factor is far more often the space beside the building than the height itself.
Detached houses beyond the built-up areas
Outside the towns, detached and semi-detached building is strongly represented in this province, with generous plots and gardens that run right round all four elevations. For maintenance that is a favourable situation: you can work the full perimeter without getting boxed in anywhere, and garden furniture or the odd hedge is usually the only thing that needs shifting aside.
What does matter is the height of the roof. On this type of house the ridge sits a long way above the gutter, and anyone wanting to reach a chimney, the side of a dormer or the top course of tiles has to go higher than the gutter height suggests. Working back from the highest point you actually need to touch is the most reliable way to settle on the reach you need.
Industrial estates and logistics buildings
This province has a dense concentration of industrial estates with warehouses, distribution halls and multi-occupancy business units. Work at height there means interior jobs in tall spaces, cladding and roof edges on the outside, and services fixed under a high ceiling structure. Indoors the floor is flat and load-bearing, which makes setting up considerably simpler than out on the yard, where potholes and loose paving add extra levelling work.
For short jobs inside a tall unit the MiTower is a common pick: a one-person scaffold reaching up to six metres of working height, light enough to move on your own and narrow enough to go through an ordinary door into the next hall. For a long elevation or an external roof edge a mobile set-up wins out, simply because you have to reposition it less often.
Historic cores and compact town centres
The older centres in this province are compact, with buildings that front straight onto a narrow street or a market square. Room to set up is limited, and the RS51, at 75 centimetres wide, is usually the only workable model. For facade work on this kind of property it pays to book the delivery for a quiet part of the day so there is space to lay the parts out and get started.
Indoors these buildings pose a problem of their own: high ceilings, deep stairwells and floors set further apart than in modern housing. The room scaffold is built for exactly that. It passes through internal doorways from roughly 70 centimetres upwards, so you can carry it from room to room without stripping it down every time. For repainting a tall landing that is often the only workable approach.
Distance from the warehouse, and planning around it
From Amsterdam, Noord-Brabant is a fair run, noticeably further than the provinces immediately around us but shorter than the very southern tip of the country. For planning purposes it makes no difference at all. Book before three in the afternoon on a working day and the equipment is at the address the next working day, the far eastern and southern corners included.
Because collecting the equipment yourself is unattractive over that distance for most people, almost everything here goes out by delivery.
