From a platform at 6 metres you look out across the second floor. The roof edge of an average semi-detached house sits at eye level, the fascia and the gutter are within easy reach, and a chimney on a low extension or garage roof no longer means stretching. Typical jobs at this height are painting the upstairs window frames, replacing rotten fascia boards, refixing loose tiles in the lower rows and clearing out the gutter.

What this height is not meant for is working at the ridge or on a gable end. If you keep reaching above your head, that is the signal that you are one lift too low and should choose a taller set up. Never lean out sideways past the guard rail, and move the tower along the wall one extra time instead. From up here you also get your first honest look at the state of the facade, so take a minute to inspect it before you start.

From 8 metres working height stabilisers are a standard part of the set up. They swing out diagonally and make the footprint of the tower considerably wider than the 75 or 135 centimetres of the chassis itself. Walk the site beforehand: a fence, a water butt, a bike rack or a car on the drive has to be moved before the parts arrive. A stabiliser jammed against an obstacle is not doing its job.

The ground matters just as much. Paving, block paving and concrete are fine, but loose soil, grass and sand give way as soon as the weight goes on. In that case put sturdy boards or spreader plates under the castors, use the adjustable legs to get the first lift level and lock the wheel brakes. A tower that starts out crooked at the bottom is visibly crooked at 6 metres, and you cannot correct that from the top.

Then split the job up per position. The platform is 245 centimetres long, so you are always working on a strip of wall a little over two metres wide. Take up only what you need for that strip: tools, a bucket and material for that section. Load class 3 allows 200 kilos per square metre, but a crowded platform works badly and you still have to stand and turn on it yourself.
