Friesland is known for its lakes, the Elfstedentocht route and Leeuwarden as its capital.

From the canal houses of Leeuwarden to homes by the water, we deliver across Friesland for one fixed price.

Clay, peat and sand within one province

In terms of soil, Friesland falls into three parts. The north and west are dominated by marine clay, the middle and southwest form a low, water-rich peat district, and in the southeast the land rises towards sandy ground with woodland and hedgebanks. For anyone putting up a scaffold that is not a theoretical distinction, because each of those three subsoils behaves differently under point loading.

On sand the levelling feet stand steady as soon as they find a flat patch. On clay it depends heavily on how wet the weeks before have been. In the peat district you have to assume as a matter of course that the ground will give, and that plates under all four feet are not an added precaution but simply part of setting up. It costs a few minutes and saves readjusting halfway through the day.

Terp villages and church hamlets in the north

As in the neighbouring area to the northeast, many villages here sit on a raised mound, with a church at the highest point and the building around it falling away towards the fields. Streets in a core like that slope noticeably, so when you set a scaffold up along a facade you will almost always be dealing with a height difference between the front feet and the back ones.

The buildings themselves are generally compact, two storeys under a simple roof, close to the street. The RS51 measures 75 centimetres across and is then usually the only model that will fit between the wall and the carriageway. Sizing up the space beforehand tells you whether the job can be done from outside or has to be tackled from within.

Farmhouses with a lot of roof and little storey

The characteristic farmhouse type in this province has an enormous roof plane sweeping far down, with a comparatively modest living section beneath it. That produces a striking proportion: the ridge sits high, while the gutter at the sides comes down very low indeed. Anyone maintaining such a building works at markedly different heights around the same structure within a single job. The barn doors at the gable end often reach far up into the wall.

In practice that means different set-up positions for different elevations. There is ample room for that on a farmyard, and the wide model with its 245 centimetre platform length covers a good stretch of gutter in one position. On a yard of gravel or grass a plate under every foot is essential, because the weight will otherwise sink into the top layer. On brick paving that is less critical, but checking is still sensible.

Living beside the water

This province has more open water than any other, and that translates into a great deal of building directly on a bank, a canal or a lake. Houses, boathouses and outbuildings sometimes stand with their rear wall almost in the water, which means there is simply nowhere to set up on that side and the work has to be done from another elevation or from a scaffold on the quay.

On top of that, the ground along a bank is almost always softer than it is a few metres inland. A revetment or an embankment is no place to stand a scaffold. Pick a spot on firm paving at a distance from the edge, and when working out the height you need, remember the rule of thumb that working height equals platform height plus two metres.

The sandy ground and hedgebanks of the southeast

Towards the east of the province the landscape turns into an enclosed area of woodland, hedgebanks and scattered building on higher sandy ground. Houses stand detached more often, with trees close to the building and roofs pitched more steeply than in the open clay district. The subsoil takes a load considerably better there, which makes setting up appreciably simpler. The levelling feet rarely need winding far out.

What you get in exchange is more work dealing with what the trees leave behind. Gutters fill with leaves, moss establishes itself on north-facing roof planes and shaded walls turn green. It is work at modest height, but it comes round every year and it stretches across the full perimeter of the house. A set-up you can roll easily from one position to the next is a real help there.

Sea wind and salt air

The northern and western edges of this province face open water, and the buildings there take uninterrupted wind and salt air. Paint wears noticeably faster on the weather side, metal ironmongery corrodes sooner, and on elevations that catch little sun the damp lingers for a long time. Maintenance there is not an incident but a cycle you cannot put off for long.

While you are working, that same wind is the main constraint. In open polder land there is nothing to break the gusts, and a free-standing set-up feels them immediately. The sensible way round it is to plan the highest work for a day with a calm forecast, and when in doubt to push the top part of the job to a later session. A postponement costs half a day; pressing on can cost considerably more.

Distance from Amsterdam, and the islands

From our warehouse this is one of the more distant provinces, and the drive is correspondingly long. That changes nothing about the arrangement: book before three in the afternoon on a working day and delivery follows the next working day, right up into the northern villages. It does help if somebody is present on the agreed day and the unloading spot can be reached.

For the islands off the coast, the crossing is part of the journey, which makes it all the more worthwhile to plan well ahead and not to cut the hire period too fine. Since every day after the first counts with a 95 percent discount, a margin in the planning is cheaper than a second trip. A day of slack in the booking is inexpensive certainty here.

Recurring maintenance in this province

Exterior painting is the fixture here, with the emphasis on the elevations that catch the wind. Alongside that, the combination of a great deal of water and a damp climate means green growth on walls, terraces and timber cladding has to be dealt with regularly. On the farms you can add the upkeep of long gutters and large roof planes, where falling leaves and moss leave their mark every season.

On jobs like these the equipment arrives at the address in parts and goes back with us afterwards; assembly and dismantling stay with the user, with a manual and an instruction video supplied. What matters most at a farm or a house by the water is that you can put the set-up in place at the moment the weather cooperates, rather than at a time somebody else has decided on.
