A long province with three faces
Limburg stretches so far from north to south that the landscape changes completely along the way. The north holds sandy soils and pine woods along the Maas, the middle a district of widened river channels and arable farming, and the south a hill country unique in the Netherlands. Building styles, subsoil and terrain differ sharply from one part to the next.
For work at height that is a bigger difference than it sounds. In the north you work on flat, free-draining sand with a lot of detached building. In the south you are regularly on a slope, against older buildings of different materials, and on a subsoil that behaves in an entirely different way. A single standard approach for the whole province simply does not exist here.
The old mining district and its housing
The southeast of the province holds whole neighbourhoods built in the first half of the last century for the workers of what was then the mining industry. They are planned estates with rows of near-identical two-storey houses, usually with a pitched roof, a small garden and a rear path. That was followed in the same district by a wave of reconstruction housing with walk-up and gallery flats.
For maintenance this means a lot of work on the same kind of house within a short radius. The height stays moderate, but the rear is reached down a narrow path, and that decides the choice of model. The RS51 is 75 centimetres wide and so passes through most gateways where wider set-ups get stuck, which saves carrying parts through the house.
Timber framing, marl and courtyard farms in the south
The southern hill country has building traditions that barely occur elsewhere in the Netherlands: timber-framed walls with infilled panels, buildings of the pale local limestone, and farms whose ranges enclose a courtyard. Those materials call for different maintenance from brick: the softer stone erodes, and the timber of a framed wall has a painting and repair rhythm of its own. The pointing between the blocks also needs a gentler approach.
On an enclosed courtyard farm, the yard itself is usually the only place to set up for the inner elevations, and the way in runs through a gateway. Here too the width of the equipment is the deciding factor. For interior work on a high ceiling or a stairwell in an old house, the room scaffold is the model to reach for: from a door width of around 70 centimetres it will go inside.
Working on a slope
The south of this province is the only part of the Netherlands where sloping ground is the rule rather than the exception. Streets rise and fall, driveways slope and gardens are laid out in terraces. A scaffold has to stand level whatever the ground beneath it is doing, and here that means the four levelling feet routinely end up at markedly different settings.
Repositioning on terrain like that calls for a different method from flat ground. It is preferable to build back down to a low position first, then move, and only then build up again, rather than trying to bridge a slope at working height. That costs a little extra time on each move, but it is the only correct way to handle this kind of terrain.
Loess, sand and river clay under the feet
The subsoil varies greatly over the length of the province. In the south there is loess, a fine, light material that feels firm when dry but saturates quickly in rain and then carries considerably less. In the north it is sandy ground that drains well and stays stable, and along the river it is clay that turns soft after a wet spell.
Those differences make base plates standard equipment in this province rather than an occasional measure. Our equipment meets EN 1004 and falls into load class 3, which assumes 200 kilos per square metre of platform area. On loess or wet clay, spreading that load decides whether a set-up stays stable or sinks away in the course of the day, and on a slope it counts twice over.
The Maas and the north of the province
Along the river lies a string of villages and smaller towns with a mixture of old core building and roomier extensions beyond it. Further north, sandy soils dominate, with woodland, scattered building and many detached houses on generous plots. There is room there to work all the way round a house, and the choice falls more often on the wider model with its 135 centimetre platform.
This part of the province also has many agricultural and horticultural businesses with large sheds and tall working spaces. For short jobs inside such a building the MiTower is often practical: a one-person scaffold up to six metres of working height, light enough to move on your own across a flat industrial floor. For work on the tall outer wall of such a shed a mobile set-up with a long platform makes more sense, because it cuts the number of moves.
The longest run from our warehouse
Of all the provinces this one lies furthest from our warehouse in Amsterdam, certainly when the address is down in the southern tip. That makes delivery a run that is scheduled in advance. The arrangement itself stands: order before three in the afternoon on a working day and the equipment is delivered the next working day, including right at the bottom of the province. We plan that journey ahead rather than driving it on demand.
At this distance, collecting in person is barely an option, so everything goes by delivery at the fixed amount that applies across the whole province. Take the hire period generously rather than too tight: the first day counts in full and every following day carries a 95 percent discount, so overrunning costs far less than an extra transport. A day over is therefore rarely a problem.
Recurring maintenance in this province
In the south a lot of maintenance is stonework: making good the pointing, repairing weathered sections of soft natural stone and treating the timber of framed walls. It is precise work where you stand in the same spot for a long time, and where a stable platform with room for tools matters more than the outer limits of reach. With timber framing there is the infill between the beams to repair as well, which calls for a steady, easily reached working position.
In the north and the middle the emphasis shifts to painting window frames and fascia boards, to gutters, and to the large roof planes of commercial buildings. In both cases the equipment arrives in parts and assembly is down to the user, with a manual and an instruction video included. On a sloping plot that mainly means taking your time levelling the first lift, because everything above it builds on that base.
